Waste of time, corks are also conducive to overconsumption. Fortunately, there are a few tricks to limit the damage.
Who has never cursed about traffic jams when you were in a hurry or already late for your morning meeting at the office? A real waste of time, traffic jams would also make you lose a lot of money, due to the overconsumption caused by the braking and acceleration phases. According to a study by the Inrix Institute, motorists would then consume two to four times more in accordion traffic. Fortunately, there are a few tricks that will allow you to slightly limit the damage.
I anticipate!
This is probably the best advice to apply when you are stuck in traffic. If you see the cars move forward and stop after a few seconds, stay in your seat and wait for them to drive a bit more to start. When you notice vehicles slowing down, raise your foot and don’t wait to get to their bumper. The aim is thus to accelerate and brake as little as possible, in order to reduce consumption and preserve your pads.
Turn off your engine (and air conditioning)
If you have been stopped for a while and you see that the situation does not seem to improve, the best thing is to switch off your engine, to prevent it from running and therefore consuming for nothing. Also consider activating the stop & start if your car has one. Do not panic, restarting an already warm engine will not lead to an increase in consumption, especially on the most recent cars. When the engine is on, try as far as possible to switch off the air conditioning, which also generates a clear overconsumption.
Adopt eco-driving
If you see cars starting to slow down in front of you, don’t wait until the last moment to jump on your brakes. Instead, prefer to slow down as soon as the first brake lights come on, and favor the use of the Engine brake downshifting, in order to preserve your pads. Likewise, when accelerating, consider shifting into 2nd gear as quickly as possible, in order to keep the engine speed low and not rev up too much, in order to limit your fuel consumption.
