Do electric cars burn more often?

Do electric cars burn more often?

Often put forward, is this argument against electric cars true? An American study decided to study the question.

We often hear this statement from critics of zero-emission vehicles: they tend to catch fire much more easily and quickly than internal combustion cars, and it would be more difficult to extinguish them. An oft-repeated argument, which seems to be based in particular on the fact that electric cars have large batteries, which are more likely to overheat and therefore create a fire. But is it true? A study conducted by the website AutoInsuranceEZ, decided to look into the matter and provide an answer for good.

A belief not so true

The American portal therefore used data from the National Transportation Safety Board, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics as well as various recall campaigns carried out by manufacturers, dealing with fire risks. And the least we can say is that the electric car does not seem to be more dangerous than a thermal vehicle, quite the contrary. Indeed, in 2020, no less than 199,533 fires were recorded on internal combustion vehicles, compared to only 52 on electric ones.

One might think that this is explained because the latter are much less present on the roads. Except that by studying the percentages, zero-emission cars are always less dangerous, with 25.1 fires per 100,000 cars sold, compared to 1,529.9 fires for thermal vehicles.
