European sales: more electric than diesel in December 2021

For the first time, sales of electric cars exceeded those of diesel models in Europe in December 2021. A real trend?

The month of January is often the occasion to take stock of the past year, particularly in terms of sales figures. Some manufacturers have therefore welcomed good results despite the health crisis and supply problems, such as Porsche, which sold more Taycans than 911s. But we must not forget the figures for the month of December, which are this particularly amazing times. Indeed, the study of vehicle sales in Europe for the month of December 2021 shows us that manufacturers have delivered more electric models than diesels over this period.

For the first time, these are 176,000 electric vehicles were sold in Western Europe in the last month of the year, compared to 160,000 models equipped with a diesel engine. According to Financial Times, which uses figures from Matthias Schmidt (independent analyst), increasingly strict European regulations and rather generous public subsidy policies (€6,000 in France, up to €9,000 in Germany) have favored this breakthrough of electric versus diesel.

A particular context

While these reasons partly explain the phenomenon, they are not the only ones. Measures targeting thermal vehicles, in particular their imminent expulsion from certain city centers, also play a role. The current component crisis also has something to do with it. Indeed, most car manufacturers have had great difficulty in delivering their vehicles recently because of problems with the supply of electronic chips, and have chosen to favor their “zero exhaust emission” models. More profitable because they are more expensive, they also save a few grams of CO2 in the calculation of their average for the CAFE regulations. Diesel models, already removed from certain models such as the Nissan Qashqai, the Renault Captur or the Volkswagen Polo, T-Cross and Taigo, have thus undergone this policy.

The month of December is also special in more ways than one. At the end of the year, some manufacturers do not hesitate to boost their deliveries to meet their objectives, and even more since the introduction of the CAFE standard. It could therefore be that the figures are therefore slightly higher than usual, as “artificialized”. But this underlying trend is nevertheless real, and the breakthrough of electric cars is not going to stop anytime soon.
