BMW has just filed a patent describing an amazing steering wheel, specially adapted to vehicles equipped with autonomous driving.
Manufacturers have always wanted to reinvent the flying, this essential tool whose shape must absolutely not interfere with the driver. There are countless patent filings for sometimes whimsical orders, most of which have never seen the light of day. But the development of the autonomous car seems to inspire brands again, who are now working on the interiors of their future cars, when driving will no longer be compulsory. And when we talk about original steering wheels, it’s impossible not to think of Tesla, with its slightly confusing yoke steering wheel, now standard on the Tesla Model S and Model X.
A revolutionary system
Today, it’s BMW’s turn to unveil an entirely new steering wheel concept, which could equip its future autonomous cars in the coming years. This one then adopts a particular form, since it is composed of two movable handles, connected to a central element. L-shaped, these can then rotate according to the desires and needs of the driver, making the whole more ergonomic than with Tesla.
Indeed, the goal here is that the driver does not move his hands from these controls, no matter what movement he makes. Note that the steering wheel can also retract when the vehicle is driving in mode 100% autonomous. For now, there is no indication that the brand wants to market this steering wheel in the near future. But we can expect that the one we know today will evolve as uses change, and in particular with the arrival of autonomous car.
