The succession of Sébastien Ogier (Toyota) is open with regard to the record of world rally champion, the latter having chosen not to contest the whole of the 2022 season. On the other hand, the eight-time WRC world champion is a good candidate for his own succession on the roads of Monte-Carlo. Whereas the arrival of the hybrid constitutes an unprecedented challenge for the entire line-up in the premier category, Sebastien Ogier has to contend with another major novelty, the change of co-pilot. Julien Ingrassia having chosen to retire at the end of their eighth common coronation, last November in Monza, the Gapençais now shares the cockpit of his car with Benjamin Veillas, who was until then his opener in the world and his co-driver during tests.

Favorites ?

Despite the change of co-pilot, Sébastien Ogier is the No. 1 favorite in the Principality. Outgoing winner, the native of Gap holds the record absolu of victories on the Rallye Monte-Carlo, which he won eight times, knowing that his success in 2009 had been acquired outside the world championship, in this case in the IRC (Intercontinental Rally Challenge). In other words, only in the WRC, he has seven victories, which puts him on a par with Sébastien Loeb. Moreover, like an air of deja vu, the current situation of the Gapençais is reminiscent of that of the Alsatian who, in 2013, had played in a partial program starting with Monte-Carlo, which he had won. Ambition to conquer an eighth princely success in the WRC, a ninth in total, Sébastien Ogier has two declared adversaries, in view of the performances of the last editions: Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) et Elfyn Evans (Toyota). Third last year at the wheel of an i20 dominated by Yaris, the Belgian managed to climb the highest step of the podium in January 2020. For his part, the Welshman has never won in Monaco and has never even won on asphalt, even if he came very close last year in Croatia, beaten by only four tenths of a second by Sébastien Ogier . However, given its recent progress in the Principality (3rd and 2020, 2nd and 2021), he can hope to climb on the top step of the podium.

Les outsiders ?

Last year, Kalle Rovenperä (Toyota) had made a good impression on the Rock by finishing at the foot of the podium. At the time, the young Finn had not yet realized his great potential, something done in the second half of the 2021 season with two successes in Estonia and Greece. However, Harri’s son is still subject to inconsistent performances, with several road trips to the key, in Croatia or on his land in Finland. For this 90th edition of Monte-Carl’, in the absence of a victory, he seems able pretend to the podium. In a somewhat similar configuration, Ott Tänak (Hyundai) is credited with an undeniable burst of speed, but disturbed by several outings, in particular its gliding flight in the trees during the 2020 edition. Conversely, Sebastien Loeb (Ford M-Sport), seven-time winner in the Principality, can capitalize on his experience and his knowledge of the terrain to try to get out of the game. However, the nine-time world rally champion now looks more like an outsider than a favourite. Since his last success in Monaco in 2013, the Alsatian has never been able to fight for victory in his last appearances, with the best result being a fourth place finish in 2019. This time, he is back in the World Championship to combine the discovery of a new WRC co-driver, Isabelle Galmiche, and a new team, M-Sport.

The surprises ?

In 2022, only one French driver is hired full time in the premier class. This is’Adrien Fourmaux (Ford M-Sport), very promising, but which does not seem able to immediately take over from Loeb and Ogier in the world rankings. Before aiming for the title one day, the young Northerner must first focus on validating the stages of a first podium and a first victory. Last year, he discovered Monte-Carlo at the wheel of a second division car. Therefore, he is not one of the favorites, in the same way as his teammates Craig Breen and Gus Greensmith. Above all, Adrien Fourmaux will have to focus on getting ahead of the Irishman, who has little experience in the Principality, and the Briton, who suffered from a severe lack of speed last year on this rally. A possible podium would also be a surprise for two other young drivers looking for experience on the roads of Monaco, namely the Japanese Takamoto Katsuta (Toyota), sixth last year, and the Swedish Oliver Solberg (Hyundai), which will be baptized in the Principality in the premier category.
