Homogeneous, reliable and very inexpensive to use, this second generation Clio remains very popular on occasion, despite its age.
From 1998 to 2011, from € 1,600
Associated with the 1time generation, this Clio II remains a bestseller on the second-hand market, in third place in sales. Restyled twice, in 2001 and 2004, she experienced a long career, which even continued alongside the 3, under the name Campus. Agile and safe, its behavior makes it a ideal first car for a young driver. Its suspension comfort is soft and its roominess is very correct for its size (3 or 5 doors, 3.82 m). Reliable and very inexpensive to maintain, it remains highly sought after and relatively rated for its age, despite the often high mileage. Its passive safety, in the event of an accident, is logically inferior to that of more recent generations, its very sparse basic equipment and its rather spartan finish, before 2004. If no engine is to be avoided, the 1.2 16v 75 hp and 1.4 16v 98 hp petrol, and the 1.5 dCi (65 or 80 hp) are recommended.
RELIABILITY 4/5
Improved over the vintages, the reliability of this Clio II is generally good, especially in terms of gasoline.
- Moteurs1.4 & 1.6 16v : ignition coils burning.
- 1.5 dCi : fragile injection pump (recall at the end of 2002); accessories belt or tensioner roller, to be replaced (2001 & 2002 models) and crankshaft (mid-2004).
- Gearbox : breakages, before 2002.
- Suspension arms sometimes failing before June 2003 (recall in September 2003).
