The little brother of the Stelvio is in the starting blocks to invest in one of the most promising niches. What do we already know about the Alfa Romeo Tonale?
Alfa Romeo Tonale – It’s a long soap opera with twists and turns that comes to an end with the announced revelation of the Clover compact SUV. On February 8, we will finally know exactly what fuel the competitor of the Peugeot 3008, Volkswagen Tiguan and other Audi Q3 is heating up, and especially if he has any hope of saving the brand, currently in the doldrums.
Originally scheduled for 2021, the newcomer has made the costs of the arrival of Jean-Philippe Imparato, now at the head of the Italian manufacturer. The former boss of Peugeot, dissatisfied with the character of Original Jeep plug-in hybrid engines, urged the in-house engineers to get back to work to offer higher power levels than the 190 and 240 hp variants originally planned. This is the reason why this competitor of the Audi Q3 and Peugeot 3008, which will stretch for about 4,50 m de long, had its reveal date pushed back at the beginning of February.
Aesthetically very close to concept car that announced it, in 2019 at the Geneva Motor Show, the Alfa Romeo Tonale will also aim to mark a turning point in terms of quality standards. But it will not yet benefit from the synergies hoped for within the Stellantis group, insofar as its genesis began well before the merger of the Fiat/Chrysler and PSA groups. Consequently, one is entitled to be worried as for the dynamic qualities which it will distill via the technical basis from the Jeep Compass, far from being a model of sportsmanship. To judge, we will have to wait until the press trials which will take place before the summer. This is probably the time when the newcomer will start his commercial career, with a base price estimated at around €35,000.
