While some departments are already eligible, it will soon be possible to register for a driving license throughout France.
Until now, when a candidate for a driving license was ready to take the exam, it was usually the driving school that took care of the choice of the date and the registration. An ideal solution, since it is above all the driving instructors who are best able to judge whether the apprentice has a sufficient level or not. But in recent months, some students have now been able to register for the exam themselves, thanks to a brand new online tool launched last year. Indeed, since March 2020, the government has set up an unprecedented experiment, taking the form of an online portal allowing candidates to choose their date of passage themselves. Only five departments were concerned at the start, namely Aude, Haute-Garonne, Gers, Gard and Hérault. Later, new territories were added to the first list, bringing the total to 17 departments.
But in view of the success of this platform, baptized RDV Permit, the government decided to go even further, by deploying it throughout France. Of course, this will not be done all at once, since the number of eligible departments will then be gradually increased until November 2022, when the whole of France will be concerned. The State sees in this approach a way of better empowering the candidate, who will therefore now be able to self-judge to decide if he is indeed ready to take the driving license exam. Sanctions are in fact planned for apprentices who do not show up or who have a level that is too low, in order to avoid “unnecessary” registrations. Concretely, any unjustified absence will lead to a delay of 40 days before the next re-enrollment, while the duration varies in the event of failure, depending on the severity. The period then varies between 10 and 45 days, depending on the number of points obtained during the exam.
Simple operation
Concretely, how does it work? You should know that there are several ways to register, whether the candidate is in driving school or as a free candidate. In the first case, the latter lets the establishment proceed with the registration, but then chooses the time slot of its choice, in agreement with it. If the apprentice is a free candidate, it is up to him to carry out all the procedures, which nevertheless remain fairly simple. In fact, all you have to do is go to the RDV Permis site and then choose the day, time and examination center that suits you best. The candidate also has the obligation to declare the holder of the B permit who will be in charge of taking it on D-day. Note that the student must then provide the dual-control car themselves, which can be hired from specialized companies.
