The size of televisions has been increasing continuously for years. While the standard was still 36 inch in 2017, we are now rather on 55 inch. At the salon of Las Vegas in 2020, Samsung even unveiled a 292-inch diagonal screen (7.42 meters!) made up of an assembly of MicroLED panels. But, of course, not everyone has a huge home theater lounge. So what screen size is best for your apartment?
Calculate the size of your television
The short answer is: as big as possible according to your budget. ” For the best and most immersive visual experience possible, the screen should occupy 40 degrees of your field of vision », advocates Samsung. The necessary backing distance is therefore calculated by multiplying the screen size by 1.2. This represents a distance of 1.7 meters for 55 inches or 2.3 meters for 75 inches. Sony suggests a ratio of 1.6, or 2.2 meters for 55 inches. A survey by Que Choisir among a panel of consumers, however, shows a higher comfort ratio, between 2.2 and 2.7. Note that the larger the screen, the greater the comfort distance range.
Screen size according to definition
The definition is another criterion to take into account: the larger it is, the closer you can get to the screen without seeing the pixels of the image. So, Fnac advises a ratio of 3.9 for an HD TV (1,366 x 768 px), 2.6 for a full HD TV (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) and 1.3 for an ultra HD 4K TV (3,840 x 2,160 pixels). There’s no need to spend a fortune on a 4K display if your screen is less than 55 inches, though, because you’re not really going to tell the difference.
Finally, other factors must be taken into account:
- The size and configuration of the location where your TV will be installed. A TV in a bedroom or kitchen won’t need to be as big as in the living room.
- Consider how much wall space the television will occupy after the screen is turned off. Some manufacturers also offer retractable screens.
- Attention : « En store, the perception of space is biased by the sales area and the number of televisions presented », Warns What to choose. A screen will often appear larger at home than in a store.
