Tesla has decided to strengthen the safety devices that accompany the use of its Autopilot driving assistance system by associating it with the camera integrated into the interior rearview mirror of the Model 3 and Model Y.
In its latest software update, Tesla has provided for the activation of the camera placed in the passenger compartment of some of its cars, in order to detect the presence of the driver behind the wheel when the vehicle is in automatic piloting (Autopilot mode).
This camera is placed above the interior rearview mirror and is therefore intended to capture any driver’s inattention. It intervenes in addition to various sensors already installed, especially at the steering wheel, but much less reliable. All are designed to ensure the presence and attention of the driver, even when he does not have direct control of the automatic piloting of his car. He must in fact be able to react at any time in the event of danger.
Video data does not leave the car
For the moment, this concerns the owners of Model 3 and Model Y. Tesla also ensured the confidentiality of the data. According to this new update, “ the camera data does not leave the car, which means the system cannot transmit this information unless data sharing itself is enabled ».
This decision to activate the indoor camera is also the consequence of many accidents having involved a Tesla with Autopilot mode activated and drivers who are not sufficiently vigilant. As a reminder, the Tesla Autopilot is a driving mode that allows the vehicle to maintain a trajectory, accelerate and brake automatically in its lane, without the intervention of the driver. He must nevertheless monitor what is happening in order to be able, at any time, to take control in the event of a problem.
